Destinations

Choose a place.
Then understand it.

Six strong starting points for a first or repeat trip to Thailand—organized by atmosphere, travel style and the stories behind each place.

Thailand is easier to plan when you choose by experience.

Bangkok is the strongest all-round introduction: temples, river life, food, shopping and modern city energy in one place. Chiang Mai slows the pace and adds northern Lanna culture, mountains and craft traditions. Phuket and Krabi are both southern beach bases, but they feel different: Phuket has the broadest mix of resort areas and urban conveniences, while Krabi is defined by limestone scenery and island-hopping. Ayutthaya is the historical counterpoint to Bangkok, and Ko Samui offers a Gulf-island rhythm with beaches, wellness and easy resort time.

Use the guide below to pick one anchor destination, then add only one or two places that create contrast rather than repeating the same kind of trip.

Bangkok
City / River / Food

Bangkok

Best for first-time visitors who want variety.

Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Pho and Wat Arun form a strong historic core, while Chinatown, markets, malls and the Chao Phraya show very different sides of the city. Bangkok works best when you plan by neighborhood instead of crossing the city repeatedly.

Chiang Mai
Culture / Mountains / Crafts

Chiang Mai

Best for travelers who want a slower pace and northern culture.

Chiang Mai combines Lanna heritage with contemporary cafés, art and design. Doi Suthep is the landmark temple experience, while Thapae Walking Street, Nimman and mountain day trips such as Doi Inthanon broaden the trip beyond the old city.

Phuket
Beaches / Resorts / Old Town

Phuket

Best for travelers who want the widest range of beach-trip options.

Thailand’s largest island mixes major beaches such as Patong, Kata and Karon with quieter northern stretches and the architecture and food culture of Phuket Old Town. It also works as a base for boat trips and water activities.

Krabi
Limestone / Islands / Adventure

Krabi

Best for scenery, island-hopping and a more nature-led beach trip.

Krabi is known for dramatic limestone cliffs, beaches, sea caves and offshore islands. Ao Nang is the practical base for many visitors; Railay, Ko Lanta and island trips add different levels of seclusion and activity.

Ayutthaya
History / Ruins / River

Ayutthaya

Best as a historical layer before or after Bangkok.

The former royal capital is centered on a landscape of temple ruins and river routes. The historical park gives useful context for the architecture and political history travelers later encounter in Bangkok.

Ko Samui
Beaches / Wellness / Gulf Islands

Ko Samui

Best for a slower island stay with a broad resort range.
